General Discussion
Proper drywall installation and finishing Tape and Bed Seams
• Preparation:
• Ensure your framing is properly spaced, plumb, and level.
• Measure and cut the drywall sheets to fit the space. Use a utility knife and a straightedge for precise cuts.
Drywall Installation:
• Installation:
• Start from the top and work your way down. Begin with the ceiling, then move to the walls.
• Position the drywall sheet against the framing, leaving a slight gap (about 1/8 inch) between sheets for expansion.
• Attach the drywall to the framing using drywall screws or nails. Screws are preferred as they provide better holding power.
• Space screws or nails about 12-16 inches apart along the edges and every 16-24 inches in the field.
• Seam and Joint Treatment:
• For butt joints (where two non-tapered edges meet), create a recess by scraping away the paper core and apply joint compound.
• For tapered joints, apply a thin layer of joint compound over the tape recess.
• Embed drywall tape into the wet compound, pressing it down with a drywall knife.

Tape and Bedding:
1. First Coat:
• Using a 6-inch or 8-inch drywall knife, apply a thin coat of joint compound over the taped seams and screws/nail heads.
• Feather the edges of the compound to blend it with the surrounding drywall.
• Allow the first coat to dry completely before moving on to the next step. This may take around 24 hours.
2. Second Coat:
• Apply a wider layer of joint compound using a 10-inch or 12-inch drywall knife, extending beyond the first coat to ensure proper feathering.
• Feather the edges again to create a smooth transition from the compound to the drywall surface.
• Allow the second coat to dry fully. This typically takes another 24 hours.
3. Final Coat:
• Apply a thin layer of joint compound using a 12-inch drywall knife, feathering the edges once more.
• This coat should result in a seamless, smooth surface. Be meticulous with your feathering for a professional finish.
4. Sanding:
• Once the final coat is completely dry, use fine-grit sandpaper to gently sand the dried joint compound, smoothing any imperfections.
• Sanding creates a smooth surface ready for priming and painting.
